We’re located in the Atlas Mill Compound on Reay Road. It’s one of those old Mumbai spots that feels like it’s been there forever. The walls are thick and the ceilings are high, which is good for when we’re moving around heavy metal stock. It’s a bit of a maze in here sometimes. You can hear the trains passing by quite clearly from the workshop floor since the station is so close. The air always has that faint smell of iron and old oil. We spend most of our time at 3/5, managing the production side of things. It’s not the cleanest environment, but that’s just the nature of working with metals. We have some machines that have been with us for years, and they still run better than some of the newer stuff we’ve tried out recently. The office is just a small partitioned area where we keep the ledgers and handle the billing. It’s usually cluttered with samples and blueprints from different jobs. When it’s monsoon season, the sound of the rain on the old roof is so loud you can’t even hear the phone ring. We just keep our heads down and focus on getting the manufacturing orders sorted out. It’s a tight-knit group here. Most of the staff have been coming to this same compound for a decade or more. We know the chai wallah by name and he knows exactly when we’re going to need a round to keep going.
