Mahavir Lock Mart

Mahavir Lock Mart is right at 166 Masjid in the Surat Textile Market. It is a very busy area because of all the fabric shops and people moving bales of cloth around. We deal with locks and keys all day long. The shop smells a bit like metal and oil. There are rows and rows of different keys hanging on the walls. Some are old and some are for new types of doors. We spend a lot of time cutting keys and helping people who lost theirs. The noise from the textile market is always there in the background. Trucks are unloading and people are shouting orders nearby. Our counter is quite high and made of heavy wood. We have a small machine for duplicating keys that makes a loud grinding sound when it’s running. Sometimes the shop gets very cramped when more than two people come in at once. We keep a lot of inventory in the back, mostly heavy padlocks and security bolts. It’s a dusty job sometimes because of the metal filings. We don’t have much room for decor, just the tools of the trade. People from all over the market come to us when they have a problem with a cabinet or a shutter lock. We have been in this spot for years and know most of the other shopkeepers around the Masjid area. It’s just steady, honest work from dawn until dusk every day we are here.
