Down in Chembur West, we stay busy at Jai Jalaram Car Accessories. If you own a car around here, you probably know the street we are on. It is always loud with the sound of horns and engines. We spend our days surrounded by rolls of seat cover material, boxes of LED lights, and stacks of floor mats. It is a messy kind of work because we are always leaning into cars or crawling around on the floor to get a wire fixed. My hands usually have a bit of grease or glue on them by lunchtime. We don't have a fancy waiting room for customers. Most people just stand around on the sidewalk and watch us work on their vehicles. We have all kinds of things stuffed into the back of the shop, from basic steering covers to those newer touchscreens everyone seems to want now. Sometimes a job takes much longer than we thought because a screw is rusted or a wire is missing, and we just have to figure it out as we go. We aren't a big corporate garage with uniforms; we are just a local team that knows how to fix up a car to make it look a bit better. The sun hits the front of the shop pretty hard in the afternoon, so we usually have a tea break then to get out of the heat for a bit. It’s hard work and the street is always dusty, but it keeps us going.
