J. Manish & Co.

Masjid Bunder is always a bit much, especially around Ahmedabad Street. We are tucked into 39/A. It’s an old building, and the stairs have seen better days. Inside, J. Manish & Co. is mostly just desks piled with files and the sound of the ceiling fan clicking on its medium setting. We spend most of our mornings dealing with whatever came in the day before. The light in this part of town has a certain way of hitting the dust in the air around three in the afternoon. It gets hot, so we usually have someone go down for tea every couple of hours. There is a small vendor right outside who knows exactly how much sugar we like. Most of the people working here have been around for years, so we don't really need to explain things to each other anymore. We just get on with the work. It’s a lot of ledger entries and phone calls to people who are usually in a hurry. You can hear the trucks and carts rattling outside all day long. Sometimes it’s hard to hear the person on the other end of the line, but you get used to it. The floor is slightly uneven near the back door. It isn't a fancy setup by any means, but it works for us and the people who come to see us. We keep the windows open when the breeze is right, though that also lets in all the street noise.
