Hiten Tailors

Hiten Tailors is just a small shop here in Western India Chawl No 3. If you are looking for us, we are right at the Cotton Exchange area. Rathod Jewellers is directly across from us, so that makes it easier to find the door. We spend most of our days with the measuring tape around our necks and the sewing machines humming in the background. It is not a fancy place with air conditioning or big displays. We have stacks of fabric everywhere and the floor is usually covered in bits of thread and offcuts by lunchtime. People from the chawl come by to get their shirts mended or new trousers made for weddings. Sometimes it gets very loud with the traffic outside and the noise of the market, but we are used to it by now. We just sit on our stools and keep working until the sun goes down. My father started this and now we just keep it going as it always was. We do not have a website or anything like that. People just know where we are. We have a small teapot that stays warm all day and we take turns drinking chai when there is a break in the work. It is just a regular life here, sewing clothes and making sure the fit is right for whoever walks in. We keep our scissors sharp and our needles moving every single day.
