Hindustan Construction Company Ltd.

Working in Sundernagar is quite a change from the big cities. We are located in Mohalla Pungh, specifically at Mr. Amar Sharma’s place. He is a forest ranger, and his house serves as our base for Hindustan Construction Company Ltd here in Himachal Pradesh. It is a much more personal way of working. The air is clear and the views are great, but the hills make construction work a lot more complicated than it is on the plains. Our office space is basically a couple of rooms that we have filled with computers and filing boxes. It is quiet for the most part, except for the sound of the wind or the occasional truck passing by on the mountain roads. We spend a lot of time on the phone with the main office trying to explain the local conditions. Dealing with the weather is a big part of what we do here, especially when the winters get cold and everything slows down. We don't have any formal mission statements or anything like that posted on the walls. We just drink a lot of hot tea and try to stay on top of the paperwork for the various projects happening in the district. It feels more like a small family operation than a big construction firm, which is just the way it goes when you are working in the mountains. We just get the work done day by day.
