If you find yourself at 168/E on Dr. Ambedkar Road in Dadar East, you might see the sign for Hindustan Construction Company Ltd. We are up on the fourth floor in flat 404 at Ganesh Niwas. It is not exactly a fancy place with a lobby or anything like that. It is just a regular office where we get through the day’s work. The lift works most of the time but sometimes we just take the stairs if we are in a hurry. Dadar is always noisy with the traffic and people shouting, so it never really gets quiet here until late in the evening. Inside the office, things are usually a bit cluttered with folders and rolls of site drawings. We have a few desks squeezed in and there is usually someone on the phone trying to track down a delivery or talking to a foreman. We have been in this part of Mumbai for a while now and we know the local chai wallah quite well. There is no big corporate mission statement on the wall, just a calendar and some old photos of projects we finished years ago. It gets pretty hot in the afternoons when the sun hits the windows, but we just turn the fans up and keep going. Most of us have been working together for years, so we don't really need to say much to know what needs doing. It is just a place where construction gets planned and managed.
