Hind Auto Stores

Hind Auto Stores is down in Dahisar on Princess Street. We are at Shop No 11, which is part of the Lalji Devraj Chawl. It’s a small shop, but it’s packed from floor to ceiling with auto parts. We have shelves that go all the way up, and sometimes we have to use a rickety ladder to reach the stuff at the top. The street outside is always oily and busy with people fixing their vehicles. Being in a chawl means there’s always people around, talking and shouting to each other across the way. It’s a very lively place to work. We spend our time looking for specific bolts or filters for the customers who stop by. Our hands are usually covered in some kind of grease or dust by noon. We have a small desk where we keep the ledger and a telephone that rings fairly often. The floor is stained with oil, which is pretty much expected for an auto store. We’ve been at Shop No 11 for a long time now, and we know most of the other shopkeepers on Princess Street. It’s not the cleanest job in the world, but we like the pace of it. There is always someone coming in with a part that needs replacing. We just dig through the stacks until we find the right one for them. It gets crowded inside sometimes, so we have to move boxes out to the front just to have room to stand.
