Up on the fifth floor of Acme Ind. Park in Goregaon East, we spend most of our time looking at screens and fiddling with sensitive equipment. Room 503 isn't exactly a playground, but it is full of technical instruments that we have to keep an eye on. Hemetek Techno Instruments Pvt Ltd is the kind of place where things have to be kept somewhat clean, though you’ll still see cables running across the floor and manuals piled up on the workbenches. Goregaon is always buzzing, and the industrial park is no different—there’s a constant stream of people in the elevators and the sound of the city coming through the glass. We don't have a lot of space for anything that isn't essential to the work. Most days are spent calibrating things or checking how a specific sensor is behaving. It can be tedious work, and sometimes we just stare at a machine for an hour to make sure it’s doing what it’s supposed to do. We don’t use a lot of fancy words here; we just talk about what’s working and what isn’t. The breakroom is just a small corner with a kettle, and that’s where we usually end up talking about things other than technology. It’s a focused environment, but it feels like a regular workplace where everyone is just trying to get their tasks finished before the commute home in the Mumbai traffic starts.
