Ballard Estate is one of those parts of Mumbai that feels like you have stepped back in time. All the buildings are made of stone and look very serious and old. We are in the Tazir Building, on the first floor, at 6/12. It’s on Calicut Street. The stairs are wooden and they creak a bit when you walk up to the office. Our space at Harmee Exports has high ceilings which is nice during the humid months. The light that comes through those tall windows in the afternoon is actually quite nice, even if the view is just more stone buildings. We deal with exports, so there is always a lot of talk about shipping schedules and port delays. Being close to the docks helps a lot with the logistics. We don’t have any modern glass partitions or fancy lights. It’s just old desks and some big windows that look out onto the street. You can see the people walking by and the occasional heavy truck trying to navigate the narrow lanes. We drink a lot of coffee and spend most of our time on the phone or typing out manifests. It’s a quiet kind of stress, making sure everything is on time. We’ve been in this building for quite a while now. We don't do much in terms of promotion. Most of our work comes from people we have known for years. It’s a small operation, but it keeps us on our toes. Ballard Estate is a nice area to walk around during lunch, even if the food is a bit pricey for everyday.
