We spend most of our days dealing with the leftovers of big vessels. Based at the Sylverton Building on Wodehouse Road in Colaba, we have been at this for a while now. Ship breaking isn't the cleanest work you will find, but it keeps us busy and the yard stays full. It is mostly about taking things apart piece by piece and figuring out what can still be used. We have a crew that knows how to handle the heavy stuff without making too much of a fuss. The office in Colaba is where the paperwork happens, though the real noise is elsewhere. Sometimes the phones don’t stop ringing and other times it’s just the sound of the ceiling fan while we go through the manifests. We aren't trying to change the world or anything, we just want to get the ships dismantled properly and move the scrap along. It is a lot of logistics and manual labor mixed together. Most of us have been working here for years, so we know the routine like the back of our hands. If you walk by the building, you might not even realize what we do inside, but there is always a lot going on behind those doors. We just focus on the task at hand and try to stay organized despite all the rust and heavy metal we deal with every single day. It’s honest work, even if it gets a bit messy sometimes. We keep going because it’s what we know.
