Bhandup West is always loud with all the factories and traffic, especially near Lake Road. We are right across from the Hind Rectifier place, in Hind House. If you know the New Bharat Industrial Estate, you can’t miss us. The shop is full of boxes, mostly safety boots and shoes for the workers around here. It smells like leather and rubber all day long at Glod Step Safety Shoes, which you get used to after a while. We spend a lot of time moving heavy crates around and checking the soles of the shoes to make sure they are tough enough for the factory floor. It’s hard work, and our hands are usually a bit dirty by the end of the shift. The afternoon sun hits the front window pretty hard, so we keep the blinds down mostly to stay cool. It’s a practical business for a practical part of Mumbai. People come in looking for something that won't fall apart on a construction site. We don't do much talking, just show them what we have and let the shoes do the work. The floor is concrete and the shelves are just basic metal, but it works for us. Sometimes the tea guy comes by and we take a ten-minute break on the steps outside. Then it’s back to the boxes and the invoices. It’s just a regular local business trying to supply the right gear for the job without any fuss.
