Steelyard House is where we set up our office, right in the middle of the iron market in Andheri West. It is an old-school kind of place where business is done with a lot of phone calls and paperwork. We deal with industrial materials and iron, so the environment is very practical and not at all like those glass buildings you see in other parts of Mumbai. There are trucks moving in and out of the lane all day long, and the sound of metal hitting metal is basically our background music. We have a small team here at number 45 and we’ve been working together for quite some time. We don't spend money on fancy decorations because we are usually too busy tracking shipments or checking the quality of a batch that just came in. Our desks are covered in ledgers and technical specs. It gets a bit cramped when we have a few visitors at once, but we make it work. Doing business in the iron market means you have to be ready for things to change quickly. Prices go up and down and sometimes a delivery gets stuck in traffic for hours. We just try to keep things moving as best as we can. It’s a tough industry but it feels good to be right in the thick of it here in Andheri. We know the neighbors and the local loaders, and that makes the day go by easier.
