Our office is tucked away on the third floor of the United India Building on Sir P.M. Road. It is right in the Fort area, so there is always a lot of noise from the street and people rushing to catch their trains. We’ve been at this address, P.B.No.962, for a long time. The building itself has that old Mumbai feel to it, with high ceilings and heavy doors. We deal with a lot of industrial materials, mostly abrasives and things used in manufacturing. It is a busy place with papers everywhere and phones ringing constantly. Some of us have been working here for twenty years and we know the rhythms of the office. We spend the day talking to suppliers and making sure the shipments are moving. It’s not a fancy showroom; it’s more of a place where the actual work of running the company happens. The elevators are a bit slow, so we often take the stairs if we are in a hurry. Sometimes the monsoon rains leak a little near the windows, but we just put a bucket down and keep working. People come in and out all day for meetings or to drop off documents. It is a solid place to work. We focus on getting the orders right and making sure the billing is handled correctly. Fort is a great place to be because everything is so close. We usually grab lunch at the local stalls nearby.
