Bhagirathi Cake Shop

The shop is situated in the Shivam Co Operative Housing Society on 90 Feet Road in Parel. Being on DP Road 3 means there is always a lot of dust and noise from the construction and traffic nearby. We open the doors around mid-morning after the first delivery of supplies arrives. Most of our day is spent behind the glass counter, rearranging the cake boxes and making sure the displays look decent. It is not a very big space, so things can get cramped when more than three people are standing inside. We do a lot of writing on cakes with icing, which takes a steady hand even when the shop gets loud. The smell of sugar and sponge is pretty much stuck in our clothes by the time we leave. We have a small fridge in the back for the cream and some stools for when we get a break. The neighborhood kids often press their faces against the glass to see what we’ve put out for the day. Sometimes the power goes out in this part of Parel, and we have to scramble to keep everything cold. It’s just us doing the daily work of running a small bakery. We don't have a marketing team or anything; we just talk to the neighbors and sell them what they need for their parties. It’s a simple life behind the counter on 90 Feet Road.
