Nagdevi Street is a tight squeeze with all the shops packed together. We are at number 29 and it’s been that way for a long time. You can hear the carts rattling on the stones outside all day long. It’s a place for tools and hardware and stuff that gets your hands dirty. The shop is full of metal things and the smell of grease and iron is everywhere. We don't have a fancy showroom. Everything is on shelves or in boxes. If you want something, we usually know exactly which pile it’s in even if it looks like a mess to anyone else walking in from the street. It gets very hot in the summer and we just have the old fans spinning overhead to keep the air moving. We know all the other shopkeepers around here and we talk over the noise of the street. People come here because they need something specific for a job. We don’t spend money on decorating the place. The walls are just the same color they’ve been for years. Sometimes we have to move three things just to reach one item in the back of the shelf. That’s just how it is on Nagdevi Street. We open early and stay until the sun goes down and the traffic starts to thin out a bit. It’s a busy life but it’s honest work and we’ve been doing it at this same address for years.
