If you have ever been to Kalbadevi in Mumbai, you know exactly what the area around Lohar Chawl is like. It is crowded, noisy, and there is always someone pushing a cart full of fabric or hardware past you. We are up on the third floor of the Diamond Building on Pathakwadi Road. Getting up there can be a bit of a workout if the lift is acting up, which happens more often than we would like. The office itself is full of samples and stacks of paper. Manibhadraveer Weaving Mills has been a part of this busy neighborhood for a while. We don't have much space to move around, but that is just how it is in South Mumbai. Every square inch is used for something. You can hear the traffic from the street below all day long. It's a lot of old-fashioned work here, mostly keeping track of what is on the looms and where it needs to go. We usually grab lunch from one of the small places nearby and eat at our desks. It isn't a place for fancy suits or long speeches. It’s just about the day-to-day tasks of the weaving business. We stay busy with the local trade and try to keep our heads down. It can be chaotic outside, but once you get inside our doors, it is just us focused on the day's list of things to do.
