Our place, Riga Ceramica Pvt. Ltd., is out in Rangpar, which is in the Gujarat area. It’s a bit of a drive to get out here but it’s where all the space is for what we do. Ceramics take up a lot of room, so we need the big sheds and the open areas for the kilns and the storage. When you walk around the site, there is always a fine layer of dust on everything, which is just part of working with clay and stone. We have piles of raw materials on one side and finished crates of tiles or whatever we are making on the other. It’s a very hands-on kind of job. The sun gets really hot out here in Gujarat, so we try to get the heavy loading done early in the morning before it gets too bad. We have a small office where we handle the orders and the billing, but most of the time you’ll find us out on the floor seeing how the latest batch came out of the heat. Things don’t always go perfectly, sometimes a batch breaks or the color isn't quite what we expected, so we just have to start over. It’s a lot of physical labor and keeping an eye on the temperature gauges. We aren't trying to be anything fancy, just a group of people making ceramics in a dusty corner of Rangpar.
