S.B. Rice Milss

S.B. Rice Milss is tucked away in V.P.O. Bela, near Chamkaur Sahib. It is a pretty quiet spot until the tractors start arriving with the harvest. We have been operating here for years, and the routine hasn't changed much. We focus on the local rice that the farmers bring us. It is a lot of manual work, checking the grain and making sure the moisture is right before it goes into the mill. We don’t have any of those fancy computerized systems. We just use the same machines we have always used. Sometimes they break down, and we have to fix them ourselves with whatever tools are handy. It is a hot and dusty environment, but we are used to it by now. My shirt is usually soaked with sweat by midday. We don't have any sales team or big brochures to hand out. We just talk to people face to face. The family helps out during the busy months because we need all the hands we can get. It is hard to hear anything over the roar of the engines, so we don't talk much while we are working. We just want to get the bags filled and the trucks moved out so the next person can come in. It is just how we do things here, and it keeps us out of trouble. We are proud of what we do, even if it is just simple labor in the village. It is a good way to live.
