Singla Provision Stores

Our shop is right on Jagraon Kishen Road, specifically near the Kanta Laxmi Nivas Chawl. It’s a busy area with people moving in and out all day long. Singla Provision Stores has been our life for many years now. We sell the usual things like rice, spices, and cleaning supplies. The shop is small and the walls could definitely use a fresh coat of paint, but it works for what we need to do. I usually sit behind the counter near the big glass jars of candy that the neighborhood kids like so much. My hands are always a bit dusty from handling the grain sacks and the loose flour. We don't have any fancy displays or expensive cooling systems. Just a couple of old wooden shelves and some metal racks we bought secondhand from a shop that closed down. Sometimes the rain leaks a bit near the front door during the monsoon, so we have to move the stock back to keep it dry. People from the chawl come in throughout the day for small items, maybe just a single packet of shampoo or two eggs for breakfast. It’s a very local way of doing things. We write down what people owe us in a thick ledger book with a worn-out red cover. It’s not a high-tech operation by any means. We just try to keep the staples in stock so nobody has to go too far to find what they need for their daily meals. The traffic on Kishen Road never seems to stop, and the noise is just part of the background.
