If you come down to Vindhyachal in Mirzapur, you’ll find us over in the Kantit area. We work out of a place belonging to Najma Begum, the wife of Altab Ahmad. It’s more of a home-based setup than a proper factory building. Vindhyaspinners And Rugs Association is really just a group of us who know a thing or two about rugs and spinning yarn. Mirzapur has a long history with this kind of work, so it feels natural to be doing it here. The house is usually full of the smell of wool and maybe some cooking from the kitchen next door. We don't have a receptionist or a fancy waiting room. You just walk in and someone will be there to help you out. We spend hours looking at threads and making sure the patterns look right. Sometimes the kids from the neighborhood run through the workspace, but we don't mind much. It’s a busy house. We drink a lot of chai while we talk about the orders. The work is slow and takes a lot of patience from everyone involved. We aren't trying to be the biggest company around. We just want to make sure the stuff we produce is decent and that everyone gets paid on time. It’s a bit cramped with all the materials, but we make it work. Living and working in the same spot keeps us close to what’s happening in the family and the community.
