Subhaspalli Janakalyan Balika School

This school is right in the heart of Subhas Pally in Kharagpur. It’s a school for girls, and we’ve been part of this community for quite some time now. The building is old-fashioned with high ceilings and heavy doors that sometimes creak when the wind blows. We don't have any flashy signs or high-tech security gates. It’s just a gate that the watchman opens in the morning. Inside, you’ll find rows of benches and walls that are a bit dusty. We spend our days teaching the regular subjects and making sure the girls are following the schedule. The teachers here have lived in Kharagpur for most of their lives, so they know the families around here. Recess is the loudest time, with everyone sharing food in the courtyard. We don't have a big cafeteria, so students just bring their own tiffin. Sometimes we have to deal with power cuts, and we just continue the lessons in the natural light from the big windows. It’s a very practical, no-nonsense kind of place. We don’t use a lot of big words to describe ourselves. We are just a local school trying to provide a space for girls to learn and grow up together. There’s a lot of chatter in the staff room about daily chores and local events. It feels very much like a home away from home for most of us who spend our days here.
