We are quite a bit away from the coast despite the name. It’s more about the feeling of being away from the city. The area is very rural and green. We have a small setup that we’ve been trying to improve bit by bit. It isn't easy running a resort in a place like this because supplies can take a while to arrive. We do most of the maintenance ourselves. If a fence breaks, we fix it. If the grass grows too long, we mow it. It’s just me and a couple of local guys doing the work. We get people who want to see the countryside of West Bengal. It’s very quiet at night, which some people aren't used to. We don't have a big fancy menu, just simple meals that we know how to cook well. The rooms are basic but we keep them clean. We don't use any high-tech systems for booking, just a notebook and a phone. It’s a very hands-on business. Sometimes we wonder if we should have picked a busier spot, but Ratankaijuri is home. We just want to keep the doors open and make sure anyone who stays here has a roof over their head and a decent bed. It’s simple living and simple work for us.
