Out here on Zaheerabad Algole Road, things are a bit different than in the city. We are based at Ida, Zaheerabad, in the Medak district. It’s an industrial area, so there’s always the sound of heavy machinery and the smell of diesel from the trucks lining up outside. Our facility is at number 51. It’s a large space because we have to keep everything very cold. Maintaining the temperature is the main thing we worry about all day. If the cooling system acts up, nobody goes home until it’s fixed. The staff wears heavy jackets even when it’s boiling outside because of the cold storage areas. We deal with a lot of paperwork because of all the regulations involved in food preservation. It gets quite dusty on the road outside, but inside we keep things as scrubbed down as possible. Most of the guys working on the floor have been here since the plant opened. We have a small canteen where we eat lunch and talk about the local news. The work is repetitive, mostly checking gauges and moving crates, but it’s steady. We see a lot of different drivers coming through from all over the state. It’s a busy life, and by the time the sun sets over the fields nearby, we’re all pretty much ready to head back to our families and get some rest. It is a long day for everyone.
