Our place is right on National Highway-31, near the Pratapgarh Bypass. If you know where the Hawkins Cooker Company is, we are basically right across from them. Being on the highway means there is always noise from the trucks and the wind blowing dust everywhere. It is a big space because we have a lot of stuff to move in and out every day. We spend most of our shift watching the gates and making sure the loading is done right. It’s not a quiet office job, that’s for sure. The sun hits the pavement hard in the afternoon and the whole yard gets hot. We’ve been at this spot for a while now, watching the traffic go toward the bypass. Sometimes the rain makes the ground messy, which makes moving the heavy pallets a bit more work than usual. We don’t have any fancy signs or a big lobby. It’s just a workspace with a lot of heavy lifting and keeping track of the numbers. The guys here have their routine down pretty well. We start early when it’s still a bit cool. Most of the time we’re just focusing on the logistics of getting things on the trucks. It’s a practical kind of life out here on the edge of town. You get used to the sound of the engines and the smell of the road. We just keep our heads down and do the work.
