Working here in Mau Nath Bhanjan is different than the big city. Our shop is a bit of a mix, which people sometimes find funny. We handle travel stuff but also have things you might find in a hardware store. It started out as one thing and then we just added the other because that’s what people around here needed. The shelves have a bit of everything, and the desk is where we sit down with anyone who needs to book a train or a bus out of town. It’s not a large space, so you have to watch your step so you don’t trip over a box or a tool lying on the floor. The town is small enough that we know most of the people who walk through the door. We don’t use any fancy booking systems, just the regular portals and our own notebooks to keep track of who is going where. It gets dusty in the summer and a bit chilly in the winter since the door stays open for customers. Sometimes someone comes in for a specific bolt and ends up asking about ticket prices to Delhi. It’s just how we do things here. We don’t have a big staff, just a couple of us managing the counter and the paperwork. It’s a practical way to run a business in a place like this. We just take things as they come, one customer at a time, every single day we are open.
