About Silpi Nilambur Wood Crafts & Furnitures – Gifts in Manjeri
We set up Silpi Nilambur Wood Crafts & Furnitures here at 658, Manacaud quite a long time ago. The shop is always full of that specific smell of cut wood, mostly because we deal with Nilambur timber which is known around here. It’s not a fancy showroom with glass windows and air conditioning. Instead, it is a working space where sawdust usually covers the floor by the afternoon. My father started this because he liked working with his hands and I just stayed on. We have a few old lathes and some newer saws that make a lot of noise during the day. Sometimes people from the neighborhood drop by just to see what we are making. The benches are heavy and the chairs take time to finish because we don't rush through the sanding. It gets hot in the summers, but the high ceilings help a bit. Most days, we are just busy cutting planks or checking the grain of a new piece of wood that came in from the yard. We don’t have a big office or anything. There is just a small desk in the corner with a lot of papers and some old sketches of furniture designs. Manacaud has changed a lot since we opened, with more traffic out on the street now, but inside the shop, things stay pretty much the same. We just keep our heads down and do the work until it’s time to close up for the evening.
