Sadanand Stores

Being over at 7, Surathkal, we’ve seen the town change quite a bit over the years. Sadanand Stores is just a small place, really. We don't have those big bright signs or fancy displays you see in the city. Mostly, it’s just me and a couple of others keeping things running. We open early because that’s when people are heading out for work and need a few things. The salty air from being near the coast sometimes makes the metal shutters a bit sticky, but we manage. We sell the basic stuff—soap, matches, grains, things people actually use every day. There’s a lot of counting change and writing things down in ledgers because we still do things the old way mostly. It gets hot in the afternoons, so we sit near the front to catch whatever breeze comes through. We know most of the people who stop by. They tell us about their kids or the weather, and we listen while we bag up their items. It’s not a complicated life. We make sure the stock isn't sitting too long and we try to keep the prices fair for the neighbors. Sometimes a shelf breaks and we have to fix it ourselves with a hammer and some nails. We aren't trying to be the biggest store around, just a steady one that stays open when people need us. That's what matters here at our little spot in Surathkal.
