You can find us out on the Mulki-Kinnigoli Airport Road here in Mangalore. Being near the airport means there is always traffic passing by. CANARA LIGHTING INDUSTRIES PRIVATE LIMITED has been around this part of Karnataka for a long time. We make lights, all kinds really. The factory is a big space with rows of benches where the assembly happens. It’s not a quiet place, there is always the sound of tools and people talking. We started out small and just kept going. The weather here can be really humid, which makes working in the warehouse a bit of a sweat, but we’re used to it. We have a lot of local workers from the surrounding villages. They are good people who work hard. I spend my days walking between the office and the production floor. Sometimes the machines act up and we have to spend hours fixing them. We don't have a fancy reception area. If you come by, you’ll probably find me with my sleeves rolled up. We focus on getting the orders ready for the trucks. Logistics can be a headache sometimes, especially when the monsoon rains hit hard and the roads get messy. We just take it day by day. It’s a steady life and the lighting business keeps us busy enough to not worry about much else. We have an old clock on the wall that's been five minutes fast for years, but nobody bothers to fix it. It helps us get to lunch earlier.
