The shop is right here in Uday Chowk, not too far from the Kamaniya Gate. If you know the area, you know how busy it gets with the bikes and people walking by all day. We spend most of our time standing behind the counter, reaching for boxes on the high shelves. We use a little stool to get to the stuff at the top. It’s a small space, packed with medicine bottles and strips of tablets. Sometimes the labels get a bit dusty if they’ve been sitting there for a bit, so we try to wipe things down when it's quiet. Usually, someone walks in looking for something specific they’ve got written on a scrap of paper. We have to read the handwriting, which isn't always easy. We keep a ledger for the daily sales, and sometimes the pen runs out of ink right when we’re in the middle of something. The fan overhead keeps the air moving, but Mandla can get really hot in the summer. We see a lot of regular faces from around the gate. Some people stop in just to say hello while they’re out doing their marketing. It’s just a normal medical store, nothing too special to look at. We make sure we have the common things people need for their fever or aches. It’s a lot of counting out change and bagging up small packets.
