The day starts way before the sun comes up here at New Subzi Mandi. We are located at C-129. If you’ve ever been to Azadpur, you know how loud and crowded it gets. There are trucks everywhere and people shouting about prices. Our space is right in the middle of that mess. We spend most of our time looking at vegetables and fruits, making sure things aren't bruised or spoiled. It is hard work because you are on your feet for hours on the cold floor. We move crates around, talk to the farmers who come in, and try to keep everything organized. It’s never really clean because of all the mud and leaves, but we do our best. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to work by flashlight. That makes things interesting. People think working with food is easy, but it’s mostly just lifting heavy stuff and worrying about the heat. We’ve been in North West Delhi for a long time now. We know the rhythms of the market. It’s a bit of a grind, to be honest. But there is something about the smell of fresh greens in the morning that stays with you. We just keep our heads down and get the orders ready for the day's transport. It is just a regular job for us and we just try to keep things moving along.
