We are stationed up here at the BBMB colony in Slapper, which is near Sundernagar in the Mandi district. Most people here know us because of the Koldam project. Our office is actually part of the R.S. Bhadauria residence area, so it’s got a very lived-in feel to it. Living and working in Himachal Pradesh means we are surrounded by hills, which is nice, but it makes the logistics of our work a bit tricky sometimes. It’s a lot of back-and-forth between the site and the office. We spend most of our mornings checking the equipment logs and making sure the crews have what they need for the day's tasks. The air is better up here than in the cities, but the winters get really cold. We usually have some heaters going under the desks just to keep our fingers moving on the keyboards. It’s not a formal place at all. You’ll see muddy boots near the door and stacks of papers everywhere. Shailesh Kumar and the rest of us just try to keep things moving forward without too much fuss. We talk to the local guys a lot about the roads and the weather. It’s practical work. No one wears a suit here. We are more concerned with whether the cement trucks can make it up the slope than with how the office looks to outsiders.
