Helping And Caring Himalayans Association

We are located in a village called Sudharani Khalwan, down in the Bali Chowki area of Mandi district. Our office is at Rajinder Kumar’s place. It can be a bit hard to find if you aren't from this part of the mountains, as the roads are narrow and winding. Mandi is a large district, but we focus our energy right here in our own valley. We call ourselves the Helping and Caring Himalayans Association because that is what we do every day. Life up here in the hills is tough, especially when the winter snow arrives or the monsoon rains are heavy. We spend a lot of time checking on the older folks who live alone and making sure the local kids have their school books. Everything we do is very grassroots. We don't have a website or any fancy marketing. We just have our names and the trust of our neighbors. Most days, you’ll find us walking the paths from one house to another. If we hear about a family having a hard time or a roof that needs fixing, we see how we can help. It isn't a formal organization with meetings and minutes. We usually just talk things over a cup of tea and decide what to do next. We have lived here our whole lives, so these people are like family to us. We just want to make sure everyone gets by and looks after each other.
