Sureka Modern Rice Mill Pvt. Ltd. is situated out in Village-Masalda Bazar, over in the Harish Chandra Pur area of Malda. It’s a bit of a drive to get out here, but it puts us right where the action is for the farmers. We take in the raw paddy and turn it into rice, which is a process that involves a lot of heat and noise. The machines are big and they require a lot of looking after. Our workers come from the surrounding villages like Kariali and they know the land well. During the peak season, the dust in the air is thick and the sound of the mill is constant. It’s not a place for someone who likes peace and quiet. We have a small area where we keep our records, but mostly we are out on the floor watching the grain move through the system. Sometimes things break down and we have to spend half the night getting them back up and running. That’s just the way it goes in a mill. We don't spend money on fancy brochures because everyone around here knows who we are and what we do. It’s a basic, honest way to make a living. We see the same faces every year when the harvest comes in. We’ve been operating in this part of Malda for a long time, and we’ve seen the seasons change more times than I can count.
