Ons Organic Foods

Out here in Bahicha Atrai, things move a bit slower than in the big cities. Ons Organic Foods is basically a project we started to handle what comes from the local fields in Dakshin Dinajpur. We spend more time outside than behind a desk, which is how we like it. The air is fresh and you can see the crops growing right from the road. We don't have a shiny storefront with glass windows. It is more of a practical space where we sort the grains and pulses after they are harvested. Everything is done by hand or with small machines that have been around for years. Sometimes the weather makes things difficult, but that is just part of living off the land. We know the farmers around here because they are our friends and neighbors. When you buy something from us, it usually came out of the ground not too long ago. There is no fancy packaging with bright colors here. We just use plain bags and write the weights on them with a marker. People come by the house to pick up their flour or oil. It is hard work and our hands are usually dusty, but it feels right. We aren't trying to be a big supermarket chain. We just want to provide the kind of food we eat ourselves at home every day. It is honest work for honest people and it keeps us busy through the seasons.
