We set up shop at Door No. 39/290 C in the Naduthodi Complex, over in Melmuri 27. Being in the Melmuri area of Malappuram puts us right in the middle of a lot of local building activity. We focus on sand and gravel, which are the basics for any construction project. It’s a straightforward trade. We spend our time managing the stock and making sure the trucks get loaded correctly for their deliveries. The complex can get quite busy with people coming and going. We don’t have a lot of fancy decorations in our space; it’s mostly just samples of the different types of sand and stones we have available. Sometimes the supply of sand gets a bit tight because of regulations, and we have to explain that to our customers, which isn't always fun. We’ve learned to be patient. Most of us here grew up in the Ernad region, so we know the people and the local roads well. We don't use big words or try to impress anyone. If you need gravel for a driveway or sand for plastering, you just come by and we tell you what we have and what it costs. It’s honest work that keeps us on our feet. The days go by fast when there’s a line of lorries waiting. We’re just glad to be a small part of the local economy here. It's not about being the biggest, just about being reliable for the neighbors who are building their homes.
