Soni Bazar is a very specific kind of place, and that is where you will find us. It’s narrow, crowded, and always smells like street food and metalwork. We go by the name Khodoo. Our shop isn't anything fancy to look at from the outside. We have a small glass counter and some stools for when people want to sit and talk. Most of our day is spent looking at small items under bright lights. It can get quite hot in the afternoons, especially when the market is packed with people walking back and forth. We’ve known the neighbors for years, so there’s always someone popping their head in to say hello or borrow a tool. We don't do big advertisements or anything like that. People mostly find us because they’ve been coming to this market for generations. Sometimes the power cuts out for a few minutes and we just sit in the dark and chat until the generator kicks in. It’s a bit of a traditional way of doing things, but it’s what we know. We keep our records in big handwritten ledgers because that’s how we’ve always done it. It’s honest work in a very busy part of town. We open up early and usually stay until the last shop on the street starts pulling down their shutters. It is a simple life here in the bazar, but we wouldn’t change it for much else. There is a real sense of history in these narrow streets that we walk every day.
