Down here at 3, Periya Kadai Theru in Samymalai, things stay busy from the moment we open. This is a wholesale spot, so you won’t find small fancy displays or anything like that. Instead, there are stacks of heavy bags and boxes everywhere you look. We spend a lot of our time moving stock around and checking what’s come in from the bigger suppliers. The floor usually has a bit of grain or dust on it because that’s just how it is when you handle bulk goods all day. My shirt usually ends up a bit dirty by noon. We deal with a lot of smaller shopkeepers who come by to fill up their own stocks for the week. The phone rings a lot with people asking about prices or when the next load of sugar is arriving. We’ve got a small area in the back where we keep the older records and a place to sit for a minute when it gets quiet. It’s loud out on the street, especially with the carts and bikes going past constantly.
