Madurai is a hot city, and Town Hall Road is right in the heart of the old part. Our shop is at number three, and it’s been there for quite some time. We open up early because that’s when it’s coolest, and you can see all the vendors setting up their carts outside. We sell clothes for regular people. It’s mostly shirts and trousers that can handle the heat and the dust of the city. We don't have a big fancy air conditioner that works all the time, so we rely on the ceiling fans to keep things moving. The street is so narrow that you can hear everything happening outside—the horns, the people shouting, and the temple bells. It’s a very busy spot, and we get everyone from farmers coming into town to students from the local colleges. We don’t have a website or anything like that. People just know where we are because we’ve been on this corner forever. Sometimes the stock takes a while to arrive because the trucks can’t get through the narrow streets during the day. We just make do with what we have on the shelves. It’s a simple life, selling clothes in a city that’s older than anyone can remember. We just try to be helpful and make sure people leave with something that fits them okay.
