Rathinam General Store

Down here on Solavanthan Main Road in Checkanurani, things move at their own pace. Rathinam General Store is a simple place where we sell groceries and household items to the people living nearby. Madurai can get incredibly hot, so the shop is usually a bit dark inside to keep the heat out. We have big sacks of rice and lentils sitting on the floor, and the smell of spices is always in the air. I spend a lot of time scooping out grains and weighing them for customers who don't want the pre-packaged stuff. It’s a lot of manual work, and my hands are often dusty from the flour or the pulses. The shop has been in the same spot for years, and the wooden counters are worn smooth from all the bags being slid across them. We don't have a computer or any fancy billing system; I just use a calculator and a notebook to keep track of things. Sometimes the local farmers bring in their produce, and the store gets even more crowded with baskets. It’s a bit messy, and there’s always something that needs to be cleaned or moved. We don’t try to be anything we’re not. We’re just a local store where you can get what you need for dinner without any fuss. The neighbors know us, and we know them, and that’s how it’s been for a long time. It is just a part of the daily life here.
