Our shop, New Wood Crafts, is at 21 Avvayar Street in Jeeva Nagar. It’s a pretty simple setup. We have a front area where we keep some of the things we've made and a back area where all the actual work happens. There are piles of wood everywhere, and the smell of sap and sawdust is always present. We use a lot of old-fashioned techniques because that’s what works best for the kind of wood we get. The street outside is usually quiet, which we like. We don't have any big flashy signs or a website. Most people find us because they live in Jeeva Nagar and walk past the shop every day. We do repairs and also make new things when someone asks. It's hard work and it can be tough on the hands, but we've been doing it for years so we're used to it. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to switch to hand tools, which makes everything take twice as long. We don't mind too much. It’s just part of living and working here. We try to be careful with the materials we have because wood is getting more expensive these days. We aren't trying to get rich. We just like the work and the people who come into the shop. We finish up in the evening and lock the doors until tomorrow morning. It’s just a normal day at 21 Avvayar Street for all of us.
