Our place is at Simmakkal, right near the BSNL Exchange. It’s an old part of Madurai and you can feel it in the buildings. The walls at 360A are thick but the paint is peeling in some spots. We’ve been here a long time. There’s always someone coming in asking for directions because of the landmark nearby. I spend a lot of my time dealing with paperwork at a small desk piled high with files. It’s a bit of a mess if I’m honest. The phone rings a lot and it’s usually someone checking on an order. We deal with various goods and the stock is piled up in the back rooms. It’s a bit dark in there, so I always have to carry a torch. The neighbors are mostly other business owners and we share tea in the afternoons. We complain about the parking problems in the street. Sometimes the heat is so bad that we just sit quietly under the fan and don't say much. I like the bustle of the morning when everyone is opening their shops. There is a sense of community here even if we are all busy with our own work. By the time I finish for the day, the street lights are flicking on and the tea stall is packing up. I lock the heavy iron gate and head out. The walk home is always nice because the air finally cools down a little bit.
