Madurai Mercury Women Garment Manufacturers Private Limited

Our small factory is out in the village of Melakkal, which is in the Vadipatti area near Madurai. The address is 3/212 on South Street. It is very much a local operation focused on making garments for women. We wanted to set something up where the local ladies could find work without having to travel all the way into the city every day. It’s a simple building with a lot of windows to let in the breeze, which is needed since we don't have air conditioning. You can see the fields from the back door. We have about twenty machines running most of the time. It gets quite loud with the chatter and the sound of the needles. Melakkal is a quiet place otherwise, with cows walking down the road and kids playing. Sometimes we have issues with the electricity, so we have to stop and wait, which is just part of life here. We aren't a big brand you would see in a mall. We just make the usual clothes that people around here wear. The South Street location is easy to find because everyone knows where the garment unit is. We have a small porch where we sit for lunch. It’s not a fancy life, but it’s honest work and it keeps the village economy moving a little bit.
