Jai Genga Uniforms

If you know Madurai, you know how tight East Masi Street can get. We are tucked away in that 4 feet lane near Vilakkuthun. It’s so narrow that two people can barely walk side by side without brushing shoulders. Jai Genga Uniforms has been here for years, right in the heart of all that old city noise. The landmark Vilakkuthun is just a short walk away, which helps people find us. We focus on uniforms for schools and offices. The shop is filled with rolls of white and blue cloth, and there’s always someone sitting on the floor measuring out fabric. It’s a small space, so we have to be organized, or we’d never find anything. The light isn't great in the lane, but we have some bright tubes inside so we can see the stitching clearly. During the school season, it gets incredibly hectic. Parents come in with their kids, and it’s a bit of a squeeze. We don't have a fancy waiting area, just a couple of plastic chairs if they're lucky. We try to get the measurements right the first time so nobody has to come back through the traffic again. It’s a lot of work, especially when the heat hits in the summer. We mostly just keep our heads down and finish the stitching. It's a traditional kind of business, passed down through the family, and we just keep it going everyday.
