You will find Christian Mission Hospital right on East Veli Street, and it’s a place that most locals recognize without having to look at a map. The street is usually packed with carts and scooters, so getting to the front door can be a bit of a challenge some days. Once you step inside, the atmosphere changes slightly, though it’s still pretty lively. We have high ceilings and long corridors that stretch back quite a way. We’ve been operating here for a long time, and the building shows its age in a few spots, but it’s sturdy. Our waiting area is just a collection of plastic chairs and a few old fans that keep the air moving. We don't have a lot of money for fancy upgrades, so we focus on keeping the equipment we have in good shape. The nurses and assistants are mostly from the surrounding neighborhoods, so there is a lot of chatting in the local language. We know who is related to who, and that helps make the place feel less like a cold institution. It’s a bit of a messy, human environment. We have stacks of papers on the desks and sometimes the phone rings and rings before someone can get to it. We aren't perfect, but we are here every day. East Veli Street wouldn't feel the same without this old hospital sitting on the corner, and we are glad to be part of it.
