Art Architect

Art Architect is based right here in Madurai, specifically in the 625001 area. We’ve been around for a bit, working out of a space that feels more like a workshop than a formal office. Madurai is an old city with so much history in its buildings, and being an architect here means you’re always thinking about the space and the heat. Our office is usually filled with rolls of tracing paper and pencils that have been sharpened down to the nub. It’s a bit dusty sometimes because we’re always looking at samples or sketching out new ideas on the big tables. We don’t have a fancy reception desk or a person in a suit waiting to greet you. Usually, you just walk in and find someone hunched over a drawing or a computer screen. The afternoons get quite warm, so we keep the windows open to catch whatever breeze we can get. It’s a small group of us who really care about how things are built. We talk a lot about materials and how to make things fit in the local streets. People know where to find us when they have a project in mind. It isn’t about being the biggest firm in town; it’s just about doing the work and making sure the drawings are right before anything starts on site. Sometimes we go out to the sites to see how the bricks are being laid and the sun is beating down on the workers. It is just part of the job.
