We are out in Kappalur, in the B 103 unit of the Automobile Industry Sidco area. It’s very much an industrial setting here in Madurai. You’ll know you’re close when you see the Thiyagarajar Mill nearby. The sounds of machinery and trucks are pretty much the soundtrack to our day. It is a practical location because we are right where the industry is happening. Our space is divided between the engineering side and the design side. It’s not a place for fancy clothes; there’s usually a bit of grease or dust on things. We have big tables for laying out designs and a lot of technical manuals on the shelves. The air out here feels different than in the city center, more like work is actually getting done. We’ve got a small area for coffee and some basic snacks since there aren't many cafes right next door. It’s a bit of a drive for some people, but it makes sense for what we do. The Sidco complex is quite large, so we tell people to look for the mill first. We spend a lot of time on our feet or hunched over drawing boards. There is always a truck being loaded or unloaded somewhere on the block. It’s a no-nonsense kind of place. We don't have a lot of decorations, just the tools we need and the projects we are currently working on. It gets hot in the afternoons, but we just keep the shutters open and get on with it.
