If you go down to Kataia Mahe, you will find us at Prameshari Mandal’s house. This whole thing started because we had too many goats and needed a better way to handle them. The village is out in the block area, and it is a long way from the big cities. We spend our days walking the goats through the fields and making sure they have enough to eat. It is a producer company, which sounds fancy, but it is just a bunch of us trying to get a fair price for our animals. The weather in this part of Bihar is always changing. One day it is dry and dusty, the next it is pouring rain. We have to keep the goats dry because they get sick easily. There is always someone at the house if you need to talk. We do not use much technology, just our hands and what we have learned from our parents. The goats are stubborn sometimes, especially the older ones. They know when we are trying to move them to a new patch of grass. We have got a lot of families involved now. It is better than working alone. We share the costs of the medicine and the feed when we can. It is not easy work, and your back usually hurts by the end of the day. But this is our life here in the village. We just keep at it and hope for the best.
