We are located near the Treasury Office in Venglai. Most of my day is spent sitting behind a wooden desk with a stack of papers and a telephone that rings more than I’d like. People come in to ask about taxi rates or how to get a ticket for the night bus. I spend a lot of time writing down names and dates in a big register. Venglai is a quiet enough place, but being near the Treasury Office means there are always people around during the day. I have to make sure the vehicles are clean and the drivers know where they are going. Sometimes a car breaks down, and I have to spend the whole afternoon finding a replacement so nobody is left waiting. The walls are a bit bare, maybe just a calendar and a clock that ticks quite loudly. I don’t have any fancy brochures; I just tell people what is available and how much it costs. The chairs for the customers are a bit old but they are comfortable enough for a short wait. I try to keep the door open to let in the breeze, though it brings in some dust from the road. Most of the work is just keeping track of time and making sure everyone gets to their destination without too much trouble. It is a simple office for people who need to travel.
