In Focal Point, 4th Block, you can find our place at A-80. It’s easy to miss if you aren’t looking for the big metal gate. At Sikand Forgings, we spend most of the day surrounded by the sound of hammers and the smell of hot iron. It gets pretty loud, and you have to yell sometimes just to be heard over the machinery. The floor is always covered in a bit of soot, no matter how many times we try to clean it up at the end of the shift. Most of us have been working here for a long time, so we know the rhythm of the place. We make parts for all sorts of things, mostly heavy stuff that people don't think about until it breaks. The heat from the furnaces can be a lot in the summer months, but we’re used to it by now. We don’t have a fancy office with air conditioning; just a small desk near the front where we keep the paperwork and the logbooks. People from other shops in Focal Point drop by for tea sometimes. It’s a busy area, lots of trucks moving in and out of the block. We start early, before the sun is even fully up, to get the machines warmed up. It’s hard work and your hands get stained dark, but it’s what we do. We’ve been at this spot for years and haven't seen much reason to move. The machines are old but they still work well enough for us.
